Negative adverbs at the front: never / rarely / seldom / hardly ever

После отрицательных наречий времени в начале предложения — auxiliary + subject.

Hardly / Scarcely / No sooner — sequence of events

Используется для описания двух событий в прошлом: «едва X, как Y».

  • Hardly had I submitted the thesis when the editor requested a revision.
  • Hardly had she finished her abstract when new evidence emerged.
• <strong>Scarcely had S + V3 + when ...</strong> (вариант hardly)

Not only ... but also — двойная конструкция

После Not only в начале — инверсия; во второй части обычный порядок с also.

Only by / Only if / Only when / Only after

Инверсия идёт в ГЛАВНОЙ части предложения (после придаточного с only).

  • Only by completing a literature review can you identify the gap.
  • Only by anticipating the counterargument will your argument hold.
• <strong>Only when / Only if + clause</strong>, aux + S + V
  • Only when peer review is complete should the paper be published.

  • Only after rereading the abstract did I appreciate her central thesis.

• ❌ Применять inversion когда trigger в середине предложения.
  • ❌ I have never seen does she... → ✓ I have never seen such evidence.
  • Если negative adverb В СЕРЕДИНЕ — обычный порядок: I rarely encounter such methodology.
• ❌ Дублировать not с triggering negative (двойное отрицание).
  • ❌ Hardly had I not finished. → ✓ Hardly had I finished. (hardly уже выражает отрицание)
