Formal / literary
| cross the Rubicon | Юлий Цезарь, 49 BCE | formal/literary | Signing that treaty meant crossing the Rubicon. |
| open Pandora's box | греческая мифология | formal/literary | The investigation opened Pandora's box of misconduct. |
| throw down the gauntlet | средневековые дуэли | formal/literary | The new competitor threw down the gauntlet at the summit. |
| in dire straits | морской язык 16 века | formal | The firm found itself in dire straits after the crash. |
| play devil's advocate | канонизация в Католической церкви | formal/academic | Let me play devil's advocate on this assumption. |
Business / professional
| touch base | Let's touch base next week. | scheduling, follow-up calls |
| on the back burner | We've put this on the back burner. | project priorities |
| raise the bar | Her presentation raised the bar. | performance standards |
| take it on board | We'll take it on board for next time. | accepting feedback |
| read between the lines | If you read between the lines, she's unhappy. | decoding subtext |
Informal / colloquial
| pull strings | несколько негативный — «использовать связи» | He pulled strings to get the job. |
| throw in the towel | признание поражения | The startup threw in the towel. |
| on the fence | нерешительность | Half the board is on the fence. |
| miss the mark | не оправдать ожидания | The campaign missed the mark. |
| through the grapevine | неподтверждённые слухи | I heard it through the grapevine. |
British vs American:
| сорвать планы | throw a spanner in the works | throw a wrench in the works |
| это вершина (worst case) | take the biscuit | take the cake |
| с большим отрывом | by a long chalk | by a long shot |
| стоять в очереди | queue up | line up |
| at the end of the day | переутомлено, заменяется на «ultimately», «in the final analysis» | At the end of the day, the proposal needs work. |
| low-hanging fruit | business cliché, в стратегических документах звучит лениво | Let's pick the low-hanging fruit first. |
| moving the goalposts | часто звучит как обвинение, может быть провокационно | They keep moving the goalposts on us. |
| think outside the box | корпоративное клише №1, в инновационных контекстах звучит иронично | We need to think outside the box. |
-
<strong>1. Кто аудитория?</strong> Boss-level executives ≠ casual peers ≠ academic reviewers ≠ general public
- Executive update: «We've put X on the back burner» (business OK), не «We threw in the towel» (informal too far).
- Academic essay: «The firm was in dire straits» (formal OK), не «The firm threw in the towel» (informal).
-
<strong>2. Какой жанр?</strong> Email, presentation, essay, legal document, casual chat
- Legal document:
- Casual chat: informal
- Presentation: business идиомы — норма, formal/literary — overstated.
-
<strong>3. Какой диалект?</strong> BrE, AmE, или mixed/international audience
- BrE-аудитория: «throw a spanner in the works» естественно.
- AmE-аудитория: «throw a wrench in the works».
- International: используйте нейтральные эквиваленты — «disrupt our plans».
- В чате другу: «I had to cross the Rubicon and quit my job.» → слишком драматично, лучше «I finally decided to quit».
- В обычной презентации: «We threw down the gauntlet to our competitors.» → слишком literary.
-
- В CV: «I pulled strings to land this opportunity.» → ужасно, лучше «I leveraged my network».
- В academic paper: «The researchers threw in the towel on the experiment.» → лучше «abandoned the experiment».
-
- ❌ «We need to touch base about the dire straits.» — business + formal = странно.
- ❌ «Let's pull strings to raise the bar.» — informal + business =
-
❌ Смешение BrE и AmE вариантов
- ❌ «He threw a spanner that takes the cake!» — BrE spanner + AmE cake =
- В strategic memo: «At the end of the day, we need to think outside the box» — два клише подряд, читатель закатит глаза.
Ultimately, we need to challenge our standard approach.»
- Idiom-«клише» (<em>at the end of the day</em>, <em>low-hanging fruit</em>) грамматически правильны, но переутомлены — в качественной деловой переписке их **избегают**, а не используют.
<em>Throw a wrench in the works</em> носитель BrE прочитает, поймёт, но услышит как «явный американизм».
Но <em>cross the Rubicon</em> в неформальном чате — overstated, выглядит претенциозно.
Register | Use where |
|---|---|---|
| cross the Rubicon, open Pandora's box, in dire straits | Formal / literary | эссе, речи, журналистика, литература |
| touch base, on the back burner, raise the bar, take it on board | Business / professional | meetings, presentations, work email |
| pull strings, throw in the towel, on the fence, through the grapevine | Informal / colloquial | casual chat, неформальные тексты |
| at the end of the day, low-hanging fruit, think outside the box | Cliché | избегать в качественном письме |
| spanner/wrench, biscuit/cake, chalk/shot | BrE vs AmE | выбирать по аудитории |
